Gery Deer is an amazing person to know, both professionally and personally. Our family had just purchased a building and was planning a joint open house celebration for our three businesses. I have done press releases before. I have been written up in national magazines, but as silly as it seems, my hometown was not showing me the ‘love’. I wanted to celebrate in my hometown and beyond. With time short, I hired Gery to write a release.
He sent me the article in advance and told me he would release it the next day. On the day of our grand opening, imagine my surprise when 3 newspapers and a television news team showed up. 2008
My name is Michael Savage and I am the publisher of the Times Community Newspapers in Dayton, Ohio. In February of 2008 we hired Gery Deer to be our special sections/products editor. Upon Gery’s employment we assigned him two priorities; to redesign and re-launch our automotive section formerly called Wheels later re-launched “MPG” and our real estate section formerly Home Source later re-launched as “Your Home”.
Both of these redesigned publications we intended to be more localized products and less “off the shelf canned news”. The local real estate brokers/agents and automotive dealers really liked the fresh approach. Unfortunately, the timing of the re-launch of these two publications was right when the global economy collapsed. As a result auto dealers and real estate brokers/agents ad budgets were reduced 90% and we could no longer afford to continue to publish these very nice products. When we eliminated these two publications we also eliminated our special sections/products editor (Gery Deer).
The summer after Gery was laid off; we commissioned Gery to research and write a series about the transitioning Miami Valley economy from a manufacturing based economy to a high tech and medical services based economy. We received very positive feedback from this series.
Gery is an extremely bright and talented writer and I would not hesitate to commission Gery again for similar types of rolls in the future.
